Volume 4 covers 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther and Job: the priestly retelling of Israel's history with its focus on temple and worship, the return from exile and the rebuilding of temple and wall, the preservation of the Jews in Persia, and the sustained wrestling of Job with innocent suffering.

The revised Expositor's Bible Commentary, edited by Tremper Longman III and David E. Garland, is a multi-contributor evangelical series keyed to the English text. Each section gives an overview, verse-by-verse commentary, and notes on the original languages kept separate so readers without Greek or Hebrew can use the volume comfortably. The volume pairs the post-exilic historical books with the Old Testament's fullest treatment of suffering, and it is particularly useful for the books that get least attention from the pulpit.
