A Body of Divinity is Thomas Watson's sermon-based exposition of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, covering the chief end of man, the Scriptures, the being and attributes of God, the decrees, creation and providence, the covenant of works, the fall, the person and offices of Christ, redemption, effectual calling, justification, adoption and sanctification. Watson's gift was for the memorable sentence, and the book is quoted more often than almost any other Puritan work.

This is among the best entry points into Puritan writing, because Watson is both doctrinally exact and unusually readable. It serves well as a companion to catechism study for families or classes, as a devotional read a section at a time, and as a source of illustration for preachers.
