Joel R. Beeke on experiential Reformed preaching, learned from the Reformers and their successors across the centuries. Recommended by John MacArthur. Read more.
Joel Beeke's subject is experiential preaching: preaching that is doctrinally sound, deeply personal and genuinely practical, addressed from the heart of the preacher to the heart of the congregation. The book is unusual in its method, teaching the practice by going to the preachers who shaped it - the Reformers, the Puritans, the Dutch and Scottish divines, and their successors - and drawing the principles out of their actual sermons.
John MacArthur has commended it for exactly that emphasis, noting that Beeke shows Reformed preaching to be sound, personal and practical at once. The volume is substantial and hardbound, with historical portraits in the middle section and a constructive account of experiential preaching on either side. For preachers who want to know what their tradition actually taught about the pulpit.
